Entry from: Hella, Iceland Entry Title: “Water going up, water going down…” Entry: “…and wind blowing every which way. We arrived in Reykjavik before the sun was up, and drove our rental car away from the airport toward sunrise-pink, snow-capped peaks. Our first stop was þingvellir national park, the gorgeous site where Iceland’s original parliament was founded. The park boasts a large lake that, apparently, people can snorkel in year-round, though the temperatures in the low thirties didn’t exactly make me want to throw on my bathing suit. We settled instead for exploring the grounds–we had the place entirely to ourselves for the first hour or so (landing at 6 in the morning has its benefits afterall). The scenery was indescribably beautiful, and we discovered our first of what is sure to be many icy waterfalls. From there we took in stunning sights around every turn in the road, and made stops at Geysir, Gulfoss, and the still-active Hekla volcano. It felt like at least a week’s worth of vacation crammed into a single day, and hopefully the pictures speak for themselves.” Read and see more at: www.travelpod.com Photos from this trip: 1. “þingvellir” 2. “Geysir” 3. “On the road” 4. “Gulfoss” 5. “Driving” 6. “Scenery from the road” 7. “The majestic Hekla” 8. “Sheep!” See this TripWow and

Entry from: Reykjavík, Iceland Entry Title: “Icebergs and waterfalls” Entry: “Today we went on a very long but very nice tour to Jokusalron to see the glacial lagoon. The tour started at 8 am and took us all the way until 10:30 pm. We ended up driving just under 800 km’s and we went from one coast to the other. The tour started off driving out to see this one very beautiful waterfall, but the name escapes me. I took a picture of the sign, and if you see this picture you will understand (hopefully) how I have difficulties remembering such detail! They don’t give you much time here, and I would have liked to have taken the trail to the top. Made it halfway and was still rewarded with great views. Our next stop was for lunch and we stopped at this hotel in the middle of nowhere! But the food was amazing. Actually it was only soup, but it was fantastic! I had a lamb stew and seafood soup. We stopped next at the glacial lagoon and….wow!!! I did not think that I would be so impressed but I was! We rode in this big boat/car that drove and went on water. We then spent about 30-40 minutes on the water driving around the icebergs. They filmed the James Bond movie Die Another Day here of you’ve seem it….I haven’t. The colors of the icebergs were amazing. You would see blue, shades of white and gray and black

Entry from: Reykjavík, Iceland Entry Title: “Day 3: Day Trip from Reykjav” Entry: “Day 3: A Day Trip from Reykjavík: The Golden Circle: July 7, 2010 Everyone was awakened at 7:00 and the cooks prepared our first breakfast. The older crowd was up and ready to chow down but the students gradually filtered through for the next hour and a half. Once everyone was finished and the dishes were done we packed our day packs and waited for the bus. When it arrived, we loaded up. Our driver spoke little English and I never really did catch his name. The day was overcast and windy. Quite a bit of rain had fallen during the night. We headed east out of the city to Nesjavellir, a large geothermal power station just south of Þingvallavatn, Iceland’s largest lake. The lake sits in the midocean rift and is an ideal place for geothermal resources. The plant provides power for Reykjavík and also ships hot water to the city, via a pipeline, for space heating. They have an excellent guided tour and numerous informative displays, as well as windows overlooking the turbines. I showed some people the place where the building is cracking due to the rifting activity; a guide pointed it out to me the last time I was there. We reboarded the bus and headed north to Þingvellir, the site of the world’s first Parliament, in 930
